My 2015: Well-being

I am not a fan of New Year's resolutions. Oh how many times have I promised to lose weight... First promising to lose 10 lbs. Next year it was 15 lbs. The following year 20 lbs... And so on. If I would make the same promise this year I think it would probably be 40 lbs. The only New Year's resolution I've managed to keep and make a habit has been to floss every day.

So no, New Year's resolutions aren't really for me. But I liked the idea of choosing a New Year's theme. It is all about choosing a one-word theme for your year, of what you want your year to bring you. A word to focus on when living your life, a word to come back to and evaluate if what you are doing is really what you want to be doing.

My theme for 2015 is well-being

I thought about a few different words. There are things I want to do, things I want to achieve, things I want to gain, things I want to experience. I was thinking of themes like achievement, improvement, capability, doing. Big, grandiose and active words really. But then I thought I should really look at something deeper. Something underlying. Something basic.

Cheesy analogy perhaps, but you can't build a skyscraper without strong foundations. For far too long I haven't been doing what I should be doing to improve the well-being of myself and my family. Burning the candle at both ends, not sleeping enough, not eating well enough, not exercising enough, not being there enough...

So well-being felt like the right theme. It will provide the foundation to build upon in the future, but it must be a priority or otherwise it just won't happen. There are several things that well-being entails for me - less screen time, being mindful, being present, more sleep, de-cluttering, simplifying, eating healthy food, making sure I don't miss my scheduled lunch time gym sessions because of too much work... But mostly it is about keeping that word, well-being, at the back of my head when I am doing decisions, big or small.

The pictures are from our recent trip to Finland - enjoying the outdoors, having fun and being present in the moment is what I want my 2015 to have more of.

I might do the occasional 2015: Well-being post to keep track of if I am actually doing what I should be doing...

Until then do let me know - Did you do New Year's resolutions or do you have a New Year's word? Or maybe neither is for you?

    1. Yeah, it was quite a good resolution to make to be honest, easy, quick and after a while it just becomes an ingrained habit. Finland is definitely worth a visit!

  2. A healthy well-being is a great attitude to have. It isn't about being thin or at the peak of your fitness- it is about being well, about feeling good. Great post and loving those photos. I hope you keep on track throughout 2015 #brillblogposts

    1. That's exactly the way I thought about it too - of course, I hope some of this well-being will translate into a better fitness as that is part of being well. I will have to try to do some updates to make sure I am following though :)

  3. This year is all about wellbeing for me too. On so many levels. But the word I actually chose was "elimination". Your photography is out of this world.

    1. Elimination - that is a good woord! Eliminating the poor influences, people that are bad for you, clutter. Sounds good to me.

And thanks for the comment on my photography :) The pictures on this post are taken by my dad, but mostly they are all mine, except of course when I am in the picture :)

  4. Well-being - what a good word. I think in a way this year is about well-being for me too. It's such a positive word and I love that you're using it to channel not only a vision for you but for your family too. My word this year is JOY. Just typing the word makes me smile and I've got lots of plans for sharing my Journey to Joy (including a new #sharethejoy linky that I'm super excited about - would love you to join in on Mondays if you'd like to). I hope you do continue to write well-being posts - I'd love to read them!

    2. Brilliant word! Joy, to me the first things it brings to mind are enjoying life, gaining new experiences, enjoying the everyday ordinary things, living a good life :) Your linky sounds great, I'll have to join sometimes if I have a good post for it. Maybe one of my well-being posts in the future :)

  5. What gorgeous photos! I used to do the whole " this year I will lose weight" thing and it never happened. This year I think my goal is similar to yours in that I want to focus on well being, on treating myself better and being more present, more in the moment with my family. I look forward to following your progress posts!

    1. Thank you :) Sounds like you are definitely on the same page with me about where our years and lives should take us. It sounds good doesn't it, focusing on the basics. Maybe I should do a monthly well-being update, it sounds like it might be a nice series to have :)

  6. Yes totally agree with all of this. I think well-being is a great thing to focus on because until you get that right, it's hard to really do everything else - lose weight, be confident, etc..

I really hope this is a happy and healthy year for you. :)

    2. Thank you :) And the theme, I am quite excited about this theme. The idea about choosing a word for your year really appealed to me, I think it really helps in focusing on one major thing rather than very detailed resolutions.

    1. Thank you :) That was what I was thinking too - well-being encompasses all the things I want to gain from this year, health, happiness, simplification, anything that helps me to get more well in my own skin.

  10. Erittäin hyvä idea ja erittäin hyvä sana. En ole koskaan ollut mikään lupailija pelkästään uutena vuotena koska aloitan uuden elämän useamman kerran vuodessa:) Joskus ihan hyvälläkin menestyksellä.

  13. Wellbeing is a great theme for the year. I myself chose "nurture" with a similar reasoning to yours. You need to take good care of you first before you can endeavor to reach such goals as losing so many pounds. I did set new year's goals though (of which losing at least ten pounds is one). via @honestmum

    1. Nurture conveys sort of similar meaning I suppose - I am trying to be more nurturing I guess as well, and take care of myself better. Good luck with your year of nurture, hope it goes well, and the weight loss too :)
