Should you go new or secondhand for kids clothes? Toddler OOTD

We buy a lot of clothes for our little one. And to be honest, we also get a lot of clothes as gifts. There are some items that she has probably never worn, and some items that have been worn once or twice, and then she's become too big for them.

We've gotten her clothes from a variety of places - but some of my favourite finds have been from eBay or flea markets. I haven't yet been to any of the "Nearly new" sales NCT and other organisations hold, but I bet they would be good hunting grounds for clothes too. Charity shops on the other hand - I never seem to find any good clothing from them, other than toys and books.

I quite like getting secondhand clothes. It is of course nice in a trifty way - they cost peanuts compared to brand new, shop bought ones. But also, they are unique in the sense that you won't come across another child dressed in the same skirt at a play group. Oh the horror! OK, I am obviously kidding, but still, you know... You get the same feeling like when you go to a party and someone else is wearing the same dress as you are.

With her outfit this time, everything is new. Except her woolen dress. From The White Company, which tends to retail at £25-£30. Off eBay - £5 including postage. Bargain!

There are plenty of other trifty fleamarket and eBay finds in her closet too - for example her little peacoat here, or her jeans and boho shirt here. I am planning on doing some more eBay and secondhand shopping for the next size up - I just can't resist looking for cute and unique things for her to wear.

Do you ever get secondhand clothes for your children? What did you think of the outfit?

  1. She looks adorable! What a gorgeous dress and such a bargain. I have bought some clothes off ebay but I tend to just shop in the sales. I have clothes for Sophie all the way up to 1 1/2 (she is 5 months at the mo). x #weekendbabystyle

    1. Thank you :) I am a huge sales shopper too - I tend to buy most of the more expensive brands on sale only. Hah, you have a massive wardrobe for her... :D I was the same too btw :)

  2. Wowww! What amazing finds! We love White Company stuff, it's so cute and such great quality. I think second hand stuff is a great idea. It you like something, you like it, it doesn't matter where it comes from and they amount of wear and tear kids clothes has too go through, it makes sense! Great outfit and great post lovey! Thanks for linking up :) xx #weekendbabystyle

    1. I know, it is silly to just buy new clothes. Kids use them for such a short time they are usually absolutely fine. We've even got some clothes that look practically new. Especially when they are little and they don't crawl around and jump around in mud all day long, the clothes get hardly any use. Thanks for hosting!

    1. Yes, sadly charity shops aren't very good for children's clothes - maybe people put that stuff on eBay. There are some good quality toys in charity shops though. Thanks, I do love those curls :D

    1. Hah, yeah it was a pretty good deal! And it was a completely random find too, I was eyeing something else on eBay. Thanks for hosting :)

  5. I'm such an advocate of second hand, especially when they grow out of it so quickly. Not only do you get lovely quality items but also a buzz from getting it at a bargain price. That outfit is the cutest by the way!
I've got some great bundles from Gumtree - even better value than from eBay, mainly Next and supermarket brands. I did once get a pair of monsoon linen trousers for the toddler for £1.50 from a charity shop and can often find M&S in there but otherwise its slim pickings. But like you, I find eBay great for the top brands like mini-boden, white company etc.
The best best best place is the car boot sales - great bargains to be had and they will all be starting up again soon. Loadsa little girls stuff there, not so much of the boys stuff and if you have a newborn or are pregnant you could practically kit out the whole nursery for £100 there!

    1. Thank you :) I do quite like this combination of navy and white, looks nice and preppy :)

Yeah it is nice to get something for cheaper than normal price :) Another reason I like secondhand stuff is that it is a little bit more unique - hardly ever would another child be dressed in the same outfit, if it is a few years old. Or even last season.

You know what, I've never been to car boot sales but maybe I should go. I've heard those nearly new sales NCT and other organisations hold are pretty good too and you get amazing bargains there. I think I might just go the next time one is held nearby us. :)

  6. What an adorable outfit :) Hubby's co-worker gave us bags of clothes from her son and so I'm really enjoying this second-hand thing. There's no need to buy brand new clothes when they grow out of them after a couple of wears at best.

    1. Thank you :) We got a bunch of clothes too, from my hubbys sister. She had two boys and we got some of their old things. To be honest, they are so boyish we haven't used much anything else than the sleepsuits back home, but it was useful to be able to save those pennies for something else :) Brand new baby clothes are nice, but they are more of a luxury and not a necessity...

  7. Gorgeous outfit and superb find on Ebay, I tend to steer clear of Ebay at the moment as it just riles me with all the bidding. I love hunting Charity shops when I get the time, i've found some epic bargains for Leah over the past few years. #TT_Thursday

    1. Yeah I stay away from bidding wars too (sometimes the prices do get silly) but I've noticed children's clothes generally go for very little. Great that you've been lucky in charity shops - I never seem to find anything in them. Thanks for hosting :)

  8. Total beautiful bargain! I am the same with charity shops, can never find any decent clothes but find plenty of toys, books & dvds!

    1. It is so annoying isn't it - I love charity shops and wish I could find clothes there (for myself too) but never seem to be lucky... Some people find loads of good stuff.

  9. This is a gorgeous little outfit. I bought some items off eBay and I also love a good charity shop bargain. I found a Ted Baker shirt and jacket for my son in the British Heart Foundation, £10 for both, bargain!

    1. Thanks :) And wow, that is really lucky! Great finds! I find eBay is often pretty good, and I buy other than big brands there too. Maybe I should go and have another look at charity shops again... :)
