My blogging goals for October 2014

When doing something, it is always nice to actually try to do something, if you know what I mean. It is good to work towards something, whatever that is. At work we often bandy around the SMART goal - that stands for goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound, and I thought I'd try that for blogging this month. See how it goes, does it work and if it is fun. It'll give me something to aim for by the end of the month anyway.

As a stock take, my first post in this blog was 15th August, a month and a half away. In September I have written 16 blog posts, and have had 225 unique visitors in the blog. I mainly use Twitter for general parental tweeting and blogging promotion, and I have about +135 followers. It is not too bad I think for a new blog. Well, I don't know really if it is good or bad, but it seems about right. So for this month I want to increase the amount of people that visit my blog and follow me on Twitter. I also want to add more varied content to my blog.

So, what are my SMART goals for October 2014?

1) Increase the amount of unique visitors to +400.
2) Have +250 Twitter followers.
3) Do pages for my blog (About me, Subscribe, Linkies and blogs I love, and My best posts).
4) Write two features (or whatever you call them) to blog series - I love the Beginning of Us at RedHead BabyLed and Share Your Wedding at You Baby Me Mummy.
5) Regularly contribute to my current favourite linkies - those are The Ordinary Moments, Trendy Thursday and TT_Thursday, and The List.
6) Try two new linkies - The Breasfeeding Diary at least once.

One goal I wish I could have is post daily - however as a full-time working mum (that has a commute of  about 2-3 hours everyday) that would fail the A and R (achievable and realistic). The rest of the goals I think I can do.

So, do you have any blogging goals? Or are blogging goals just ridiculous?

  1. I'm always saying that I need to write down some goals (but never do). Maybe that should be my goal? I think, overall, the look of my blog troubles me because I can't afford to spend any money on it and generally speaking my images aren't great. I do have a decent enough camera, but I never take it out with me; I just use my iPhone.

    Hope you achieve your goals.

    1. Images are tricky and they are increasingly important in blogs I feel. But even if you can't kit yourself out with the latest gadgets, using lots of natural light, paying attention to the angle and the background and trying to have a 'catch' in the image can make wonders. You don't need an expensive kit to take good photographs (although it does obviously help).

Good luck with the look of your blog! I've still got lots of things I wanna do here...

  2. Good luck with your goals! I think they all sound very achievable (not that I am an expert!) and I think it always helps to have a bit of vision and I also love a list! x

    1. Thanks :) I think they are achievable, but obviously I need to do something to meet them too, linking up and tweeting and all. Just hit a bit of a slow patch though so hopefully will manage to pull through soon :)

  3. I think this is a great idea to set out clear smart goals for blogging! Not thought about doing that before I think I'll have a go myself!! Good luck with your goals :)

    1. Thank you, I shall certainly try to make them, even if I don't think they will be easy. Would love to see your goals, maybe you can make a blog post like this too :)

  4. Dude!! 2-3 hours a day? I am so sorry to hear that...hurry up blog world, you need this to be your job! How do you commute? If it's anything other than driving and/or on a packed train there is a way to utilise that time to write your blog posts! Even if it's just in a note book :)

In answer to your actual question (ha!) you've totally got to have blogging goals, otherwise how do you know you've succeeded? I'm big on this as I've discovered I have a competitive nature (much to my distress, but it explains why I hate bowling so much - no chance of winning), so I need those little things, goals, scores to beat to keep me motivated! You need long term goals too so that you're short-term goals reflect what you're trying to achieve long-term too!

Fab post and sorry it's taken until now to get here :(

    1. I know, it is soul-destroying... The downsides of living in London without an astronomical pay :( My commute has a bus, train and two tubes, so a bit of a hassle. I do try to make the most of my travel time, as I often get a seat for part of the way, but lately have mostly just been so tired and just tried to nap (somewhat unsuccessfully...). I do have my trusty notebook - for all little projects of mine :)

Yeah - long-term goals are good, and then trying to break them into short-term goals, that's sort of what I'm trying to do here. We shall see how it'll go, maybe I'll do a stocktake for November. :)

  5. Well done you for getting going with your blog and for having your goals in place! As a blogger who's been going for about 2 and a half years I am most impressed! You sound like you're doing really well. Best of luck with it! x

  6. You have goals?! I think I'm broken - I don't have goals. :(

But having found your blog, I'm really enjoying it so I've just popped along to follow you on Twitter too. I'm also a 'career mum' with a stay at home partner and also based in London, although my sprogs aren't actually here yet (any minute now!). It's nice to 'meet' you. :)
